The police estimated that between 750 and 900 people walked the six miles following David and the lead party. Our thanks are due to them for the sterling way that they coped with this amount of people, who ended up straggled out over around half a mile by the end of the walk. It was a searingly hot day, and a fast pace was set. There were complaints from some afterwards that people couldn't keep up, but what they failed to realise was that the lead party had to be in place on time for the speeches, as immediately these were over the organisers had to be inside the church (or on the door) in position for their parts in the service. The pace could not be set at that of the slowest, or the day would not have run on time. Our apologies to anyone who failed to keep up, but there was a very valid reason for it.
