Once the lead party reached the plaque outside St Bartholomew's Hospital at Smithfield, a small P.A. was set up. David R. Ross made an emotional speech, and was followed by Scott Begbie who spoke on what Wallace meant to him. Once the speeches were over, the Celtic pipe and drum band Clann an Drumma performed in front of the plaque. "When the Clans Unite" rolled out over the square, their primal sound inciting all present to tap their feet or even dance. This interlude also gave time for the slower members on the march to catch up with events again. Meanwhile, the lead party were already in St Bartholomew's Church ensuring that everything was ready for the commemorative service. Stewards were at the gate to ensure those with invitations were allowed to enter, and shortly before 3 p.m. the gates were closed for the service to commence.
